Executive Team

Janene Madden

Chief Executive Officer (CEO)

The Chief Executive Officer of the Portland Hospital is Janene Madden, who has held the post since June 2009.

Janene completed her training and worked as a clinical physiotherapist in New Zealand. She then travelled to England where she worked in a variety of NHS and private sector positions, climbing the ranks to Hospital Manager. During her progression she completed an MBA at Henley Management College. Janene joined HCA in 2006 as Chief Operating Officer at the Wellington Hospital and was promoted to Chief Executive Officer of the Portland Hospital in June 2009.

Janene is responsible for the safe and successful operation of the hospital. Whilst the hospital does not employ Consultants directly, the CEO does have a direct responsibility to ensure that all of the 500 highly experienced Consultant clinicians who choose to use the facilities of The Portland are delivering the highest possible standards of care and customer service for patients.

Janene is also a mother of two boys; therefore she fully understands the importance of high quality Maternity, Gynaecology and Paediatric care, provided within a supportive environment for the whole family. Her second son was born at the Portland Hospital.

Elaine Stewart

Chief Nursing Officer

Elaine joined HCA as the Chief Nursing Officer at the Portland Hospital in April 2010.

Prior to this appointment she worked for the Ramsay Health Care (UK) at their hospital in Reading, where during her nine years service she held the roles of Clinical Services Manager, Regional Clinical Lead and Acting Hospital Manager. Before moving to the Independent sector Elaine spent 18 years working in the NHS.

Elaine has line management responsibility for all of the clinical heads of department. She provides the non-medical lead for clinical governance and oversees the day-to-day operational management of the hospital.

Elaine is committed to facilitating a quality focused service actively promoting a culture of continuous improvement, demonstrated through clinical audit, outcome monitoring and customer satisfaction.

Joyce Woolford

Head of Clinical Services / Deputy Chief Nurse & Gynaecology Unit Manager

Joyce Woolford started her career as a nurse working mainly in A&E before commencing Midwifery training, where she worked as a Community Midwife for many years before branching into management. Her nursing and midwifery experiences were gained at Central Middlesex, North Middlesex & UCLH Trusts prior to branching into the private sector when she came to The Portland hospital in 2002 to manage the Obstetric Department.

Her current role is Head of Clinical Services/ Deputy Chief Nurse & Gynaecology Unit Manager. She is also one of the three Supervisors of Midwives at The Portland who are responsible for ensuring safe standards of Midwifery practice are maintained.

Cathy Bodie

Outpatient Services and Audiology Department Manager

Cathy Bodie joined The Portland Hospital in February 2011 as our Outpatient Services and Audiology Manager. Previously Cathy was the Outpatients Services Manager at a BMI hospital in Surrey. Prior to BMI, Cathy was the School Nurse at two International Schools serving 700+ students each. Cathy and her family lived in Germany from 1993-1999, where she worked in A&E at the US Army Hospital in Heidelberg. Prior to moving to Germany, Cathy worked in A&E at Children’s National Medical Centre, a level 1 trauma hospital in Washington DC. While there, she lectured in Paediatric Emergency Nursing and Paediatric Advanced Life Support. Cathy holds a degree in Emergency Medical Services and a Nursing Degree with honours. Her focus as Outpatient Services and Audiology Manager is on the team approach for excellence in customer service and patient care.

Miranda Eyles

Theatres Manager

Miranda Eyles began her clinical background as a qualified Theatre Nurse for over 20 years and has been at the Portland since 1997. Miranda's position covers the management of the operating theatres department to ensure patients receive quality care in well maintained facilities run by experienced and reliable staff members.

Debbie Riley

Integrated Governance Manager

Debbie Riley's clinical background comprises of over 20 years experience in both nursing and midwifery including her role as a Midwifery Sister at both UCLH and The Portland Hospital. After coordinating the Health Quality Service (HQS) audit preparation she became the Portland Hospital's Quality Development Manager in July 2002.

Debbie's responsibilities include the supervision and co-ordination of the hospital's inspections and audits preparation for external organisations including the Healthcare Commission & HQS, management of Clinical Governance and patient feedback to ensure patient satisfaction.

Angela Drennan

Paediatric Services Manager

Angie Drennan is a registered Children’s nurse with over 25 years experience in caring for children within the emergency medicine and critical care setting in a large NHS Trust and the independent sector. Her responsibilities include overseeing the operational process for the clinical areas of the paediatric services available at the Portland Hospital and the growth and development of this specialised area. Angela is also the Children’s rights representative for the organisation.

Fiona Walkinshaw

Obstetric Manager

Fiona has worked in midwifery management roles since 2005, including private maternity services. Her most recent post was Maternity Inpatient Matron, where she developed working standards for the unit’s high dependency/recovery area and made measurable improvements to inpatient postnatal care. Fiona is also an experienced Supervisor of Midwives and during 2010 was seconded to work with the London LSA Midwifery Officer where she provided support and training to midwifery supervisors throughout London. During this time she was also invited to sit as a midwifery expert on the CEMACH panel review into maternal deaths within London during 2009 - 2010. Fiona is currently completing her Master’s degree in Advanced Midwifery Practice. She brings with her a wealth of experience in low and high risk midwifery practice, staff development and high quality service improvement.

Ruth Ronianski

Infection Control Nurse

Ruth Ronianski joined HCA in June 2011 as the Infection Control Nurse and Health & Safety Officer.

Prior to this she was working as an Infection Control nurse within the NHS and has worked up to her position here gaining an infection Control qualification with 5 years experience in Infection control.

Ruth started her career in 1997 as a Paediatric Nurse gaining her diploma and degree before gaining experience in several areas including paediatric Intensive Care, day surgery, outpatients as well as in general paediatrics.

Sharon Brightey

Business Office Manager

Sharon Brightey joined The Portland Hospital in March 2011 as Business Office Manager.

Previously Sharon was at Bupa International where she was the Medical Risk and Policy Manager. Sharon worked for the Bupa group for several years; her previous roles included management of international claims assessment and payments departments, the Consultant Partnership and Recognition departments in Bupa Health and Wellbeing as well as roles within IT and business development. Sharon holds an honours degree in Business Administration and brings with her a wealth of experience in customer service, technical development and process improvement.
