Tanya's Story

Consultant Paediatric Urologist Mr Peter Cuckow was contacted in Spring 2006 with details of Tanya Alyeksyeyva, a six-year-old Ukrainian girl born with defects so serious that doctors did not expect her to reach her first birthday. They took her from her parents to prevent bonding with the child they thought would soon die. But she survived, despite having only one leg and half a pelvis, thought to be a legacy of radiation from the Chernobyl nuclear disaster near her family's home in Ukraine.

Tanya required urological surgery which was not available in the Ukraine and contacted Peter Cuckow in the hope he may be able to assist. Agreeing to provide surgery on a charitable basis, The Portland Hospital and Mr Cuckow arranged for Tanya to be treated in December 2006. Watch Tanya’s story and details of her successful treatment here.
